Its time for a come back. Astilbe are amazing, long lived perennials thriving in humis rich soils and a dappled light environment. They form large clumps over a period of time, and throw masses of fluffy wand like blooms. A highly desirable and long lasting cut flower.
Best grown in a woodland style garden, without full summer sun. They do require moderate summer moisture. They CAN grow in full shade, but it should be noted, that a full shade environment will limit the volume of blooms. The soil should be moist, but not soggy. They need free drainage.
Plants can be divided after being in the ground for some time. Astilbe are winter dormant, and can be harvested around June, and cut with a sharp, clean knife, and spread around the garden for massed effect.
To plant your astilbe, prepare your soil to a depth of 20cm, ensuring the soil is light and fluffy. Plant the ‘eyes’ (pink growth tips) 2-3cm below the surface of the soil. Top dress with some well aged compost or manure. Water in to prevent air bubbles. Now sit back and wait for the show to begin.
