Canna are a hardy perennial requiring little care. The lush foliage carries the bold blooms through out the warmer months. Canna's can be grown in full sun to part shade, with their african heritage lending them to be drought hardy.
Prepare your beds to a depth of 20cm, making sure the soil is light and fluffy. Plant the root with the previous years growth stalk upright, and the rhizome around 3cm below the ground. Allow 30cm between each planting, however a less full result can be achieved if you choose to plant further apart.
If growing your Canna in a pot, select a high quality potting mix that is free draining. Some gravel in the base of the pot will assist with any drainage issues. Ensure the bulb is well fed and watered right up until dormancy. Cannas need a pot that is at least 40cm in diameter.
Canna DO NOT require refrigeration and are happy to naturalise in the ground for many years. Feed your Cannas when they are in growth. A tidy up of old and tired looking stems will be required through out the year as your clump ages.
Happy Gardening!
