The absolute best of the best of the peony family, are the tree peonies. These stunning slow growing (shrubs more than trees) are incredibly long lived, and able to be passed down from generation to generation. Popular world wide, but particularly in Chinese and Japanese traditional gardens, the cultivars we have on offer we believe to be the first time available in Australia, and in some cases globally. Treat them as an investment, the older they get, the more they are worth...if you can bare the thought of parting with one of the family.
Tree Peony's natural habitat includes limestone mountains around Asia including China, Japan, Tibet and Siberia. They are a hardy plant once established, but do take some time to settle down after being shifted. Growing on a woody root system under-ground, Tree Peonies are best given ample space, and as such not overly suited to being in pots long term. On average, most Tree Peonies, once established may put on between 2 and 5cm of growth per year. They do not require pruning, only to your desired shape, but it should be noted branches pruned, will sacrifice next years blooms.
When selecting a position, think frost. They love the cold frosty mornings. A full sun to partly shaded position with free draining soil is necessary. Prepare your bed to a depth of 30cm, with the soil being nice and friable. Peonies have a PH requirement of 7.5-8 (alkaline), and most gardens will need a few kg (not kidding) of lime added to their growing area. Some well composted and broken down manure can also be added to the hole. Cover the roots to the base of the 'woody trunk like section', you will be able to see leaf nodes on this part of the tree. The leaf nodes will sprout forth in spring. Unlike Herbaceous Peonies, this section needs to be exposed rather than fully covered.
A queen is not made in a single year.... Peonies do not like to be disturbed, preferring to be left in ground for many years. Please select a spot for your Peonies that allows them the space to settle and develop over time to become the queen of the garden. Remember - they are slow. The old saying goes 'The first year they sleep, The second year they creep and the Third year they leap.
Happy Gardening!
