Our Hippeastrum have all been flowered and are true to name and type. Stock offered are large, flowering size bulbs, with a viable root system intact. Bulb size varies dependant on the cultivar...remember you can not compare mown grass to a gum tree when it comes to size.
Amaryllis hippeastrum need a full sun position to partly shaded position. Prepare your beds to a depth of 20cm, making sure the soil is light and fluffy. Plant the bulbs with the 'fat' end and roots down, allowing the neck of the bulb to be slightly exposed. Allow 10cm between each bulb, however a less full result can be achieved if you choose to plant further apart.
If growing your Hippeastrum in a pot, select a high quality potting mix that is free draining. Some gravel in the base of the pot will assist with any drainage issues. Ensure the bulb is well fed and watered right up until winter dormancy. Do not keep your pot in a saucer of water!
Amaryllis hippeastrum DO NOT require refrigeration and are prefer to naturalise in the ground for many years. Hippeastrum are long lived bulbs, thriving on a good dose of tucker each year. We use pelletised chicken manure with our Hippeastrum, along with a booster of Drewitts Bulbs custom bulb fertiliser, available from our store.
Hippeastrum do not require yearly lifting, and prefer be left undisturbed for many years.
Happy Gardening!
